Portrait with bees, UFO and banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A stylised, painted portrait of a woman with auburn hair, set within a honeycomb pattern and surrounded by three bees. A glowing UFO sits above her head, a hand holding a cigarette rises from the right, and a rope and ribbon banner reading 'I WANT TO BELIEVE' curls across the base beneath a torch and small badge. The rendering uses smooth shading and rich colour against a dark olive background.

Dear Nell,

The swarm came down off the chimney stack at ten past eleven, right over the car park behind the Blue Lamp, and I was the only one on the roof with a torch to see it go. You'll say I should have rung the fire brigade. I did ring them, and they said bees are not an emergency unless they're in a wall, so I stood there with the veil half on and watched three thousand of them hang off the railing like a wet coat.

Above the car park the sky had a green light in it. It came down slow and steady and sat on the bus shelter for twenty minutes, humming in a way the traffic couldn't cover. Mrs Okafor from number nine came out in her dressing gown and said it was a drone from the university. Maybe it was. I didn't go down to look. I stayed with the bees, because they were the thing I knew how to hold.

When I got the queen into the skep her wings were still shining green at the edges, which is the nonsense I'd have laughed at you for writing. I'm sending the wax cap with this. It was still warm when I sealed the box, so keep it on the windowsill and don't let anyone tell you it's only a bit of honey.
