Girl with roses and Over You Dead Body banner
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A illustrated design shows a pale-faced girl with long black braids and dark lips, holding a small skull, with a cloud-like backdrop. Green roses, two perched birds and a ribbon banner reading Over You Dead Body frame the figure. The bold outlines and shading are in teal, green and black on a white background, with the figure rendered in a smooth, graphic manner.

The funeral tea at Blackthorn Lodge ran out of sandwiches before the vicar had finished his second slice of cold ham, and Aunt Ottoline was still explaining that the ham had been Mother's wish. Hester sat on the third stair with a skull in her lap, polishing its brow with the hem of her pinafore. The skull had come with Dr Greave's will, along with a debt, a clock that ran backwards and nine crows who took their supper on the sill every evening, uninvited.

The eldest crow, Mr Sallow, had a white feather in one wing and a habit of perching on the banister to listen to grown-up lies. 'He says the ham was not Mother's wish,' Hester told her cousin Edmund, who had come up from Leeds to inherit things and had so far inherited only a cough. Edmund laughed the way people laugh at a girl who has not yet learned to be polite. He had read the will twice. He knew the house passed to whoever was still under its roof when the clock struck midnight on the solstice, and he meant to be elsewhere.
On the last evening of the month, roses came up along the garden wall, green as bottle glass, though nobody had planted them. Edmund packed his case and marched for the gate. The crows lifted off the sill in one dark sheet and followed him down the drive, and the roses swung on their stems to bar the way. Hester watched from the stairs as he beat at the thorns with his umbrella.
At a quarter to twelve the back door opened and Edmund came in with his case, grey to the lips and quiet. Hester did not look up from the skull. 'You may leave when it is over your dead body, Edmund, and not a minute before,' she said. Somewhere the clock ran backwards. Mr Sallow settled on the banister and began, with great satisfaction, to listen.
