Sit down, sit down, and stop tapping your feet, Eddie will keep his time without your help. I'm going to tell you about Ada Crane, who kept the apothecary above the bakery on Lantern Row, and the green bottle she kept on the top shelf with a little skull painted on its label. She told everyone it was for the rats.

That was the winter of the Harvest Hop, and the widower Tobias Wren asked her to dance three times running. Ada took that as a challenge. Every time he bought her a cider she tipped a measure from the green bottle into it, and every time he went home sweating and singing, she'd smile at the back of his coat like a woman who had paid off a debt. Nobody thought to ask why a man would sing so much after a dance with a sour-faced chemist.

But Tobias was no fool, and he'd been watching her hands. On the fourth night he swapped her bottle for one of his own, filled with cold tea and a spoon of honey, and he stood at the edge of the floor waiting. Ada lifted the cider, drank it down, and the whole hall held its breath. Then she laughed until the fiddle went wrong.

She came back up the stairs that night with the empty bottle under her arm, and the smoke still curling from the cork. 'Over your dead body, Tobias Wren,' she said to the dark, and she put the bottle back on the shelf, next to the rats.
