Positivity in fine line script
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of the word positivity in joined, handwritten script on a plain white background. The linework is thin and even, with a continuous stroke running through the letters and loops on the t, y and the descender. The design is monochrome and centred with generous white space around it.

Uncle Tom taught me that a line of gold leaf on a hull must never stop for breath. "Lift the brush and the boat thinks you've given up on her," he said, sucking his teeth over a tin of tar. I was twelve and assumed he was talking about boats.

Thirty years on, I am the only sign-writer left on Scarrow Quay, and the job that came in last March was a strange one. A woman wanted a single word painted across the transom of a crabber her husband had bought the week before he died. She wrote it in pencil on the back of a gas bill, very neat, and underlined it twice. Positivity. She said he had once told her it was the only long word he could spell without looking.
I mixed the black enamel thin and practised on old newspaper until my hand stopped shaking. The trick with joined script is the connections: the t leans into the i, the loop on the y carries the eye down and back up before the hull curves away. I worked from the left and did not lift once. Gulls gathered on the bollards to watch, the way they do when something is going right.
When I finished, the last stroke ran off the edge of the planking where the stern rounds into the water, so the tail of the y dipped under the waterline and vanished. The widow stood on the slipway with her hand over her mouth. "It looks like it's still going," she said. I told her that was the idea.
