Mabel had been told the brush would do the thinking if she stopped trying to make it. The trawler Constance Ray sat high on the slipway behind them, her transom bare, and the owner wanted a single word painted across it before the Monday tide.

She had never been asked to write anything so plain. Names she could do with her eyes shut, every letter a little bow of its own. But the owner had sent a sheet of paper in a brown envelope, the word copied out by a schoolteacher in his careful capitals: positivity. "Make it run," he'd said, "like it's going somewhere."
She started with the p and let its loop swing down below the waterline. The o came easily. The s wanted to lean, so she let it. When she reached the final y, the brush kept climbing, thinning as it went, until the stroke ran off the edge of the board and up into the air above the stern, a thread of black no thicker than a hair.
On Monday the Constance Ray went out past the harbour wall with the word trailing back over her name, and Mabel watched from the breakwater until the tail of it was only a line against the grey. Her uncle said nothing. He just took the brush from her hand and cleaned it, the way you would for someone who had finished a job she had not quite believed in.
