Mountain and sun line tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a line drawing of rolling mountains with a semicircular sun rising behind the peaks, and grassy strokes along the base. The thin, even black outlines are filled with short hatched marks that suggest texture on the slopes and ground. The design is black ink only and sits centred on the arm against pale skin and a white fabric sleeve.

Dear Marguerite,

The hills behind the chapel have gone the colour of weak tea since you left, and the sun still drops behind the big one at the far end of the valley exactly where it did when we were girls. I walked up there on Sunday with the dog and sat on the flat stone where we used to eat the bread and the bad cheese. Tom's cousin was supposed to be fetching the marquee poles from the farm, but he got lost somewhere near the reservoir, so I had an hour to myself with the grass whispering on the slope below me, which is not a thing I say about grass.

I know you will tell me I am being soft. Mother has written out the seating plan four times and it still has Aunt Pearl beside the vicar, which is a crime the village will be talking about for a generation. The cake came in on Thursday with the bottom tier slightly crushed, so Dorothy has taken to hiding it in the larder with a tea towel over it like a sleeping hen. None of that matters. What matters is that I finally asked Father to walk me up the path on the day, and he said yes before I had finished the sentence, and then he went quiet in that way he has, and then he said he would need new boots.

Write back soon. Tell me whether you still can't stand the smell of sea salt, because I have decided we are having the fish course anyway.

All my love, and bring the good scissors, Jo
