Yet there is something I have not told you. Behind the stove in the keeper's cottage I found a round tin mirror, its teal paint worn grey at the edges and ringed with little yellow scallops like a sun trying to be a moon. Someone had painted a woman's face on it, turned in profile, hair swept back as though she were walking into a gale and daring it. Under her chin, somebody had scratched a small red heart with a nail.

I hung it by the lamp-room door so the light would catch her. The first night I did, the flame held steady for six hours without my touching it, and I know that is foolish, Nell, but I wrote the hours down in the log like a proper keeper.

Now Mr Pryce says the mirror belonged to a keeper's wife who sat at this window every evening while her husband was out on the rocks. He says she rowed to the mainland the winter the boats stopped, and nobody blamed her. I have decided she is not gone at all, only facing the other way. Come out in June, and bring me a new wick.
