Cameo portrait and scrollwork on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm and extends onto the shoulder. A woman in profile with her hair swept up sits within an ornate oval cameo frame edged with pearl beading and scrolling foliage. The outlined scrollwork on the shoulder is unshaded and continues the design up the arm.

The shell came up from the cutter's bench in Hollin Bottom with a smear of rouge on its edge, and Mother said I'd never get the lip right while my hands shook like that. I was twelve, and the forest came down to the back gate of our cottage as if it had been asked to wait there. Father carved cameos for the coaches that stopped at the Crown, and the best of them went to London in velvet boxes.

The woman who came out of the trees that October wanted her profile cut from a pale conch, hair swept up high, a string of pearls at her throat. She did not give a name. She sat on the stump by the gate while I drew her with a sharpened pencil, and she watched the beech leaves turn over in the wind as though she were counting them. Father said to keep the hair simple. I did not. I cut every curl I could see.

When the cameo was finished she held it to the light and said nothing for so long that I thought I had made her too old. Then she pressed a single pearl from her necklace into my palm and walked back into the trees, and the pearl was warm.

Father sold the cameo to a London dealer the following spring, and it went into a box with a silver clasp. Years later I still rehearse the frame in my head: the scrolled leaves climbing out of the oval, the beads looping round her like a second necklace. I never cut the pearl into anything. It sits in the drawer beside my bench, and some mornings, when the forest is loud with rain, I take it out and check that it is still warm.
