Pug and bulldog portraits on wrists
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, each wrist bearing a tattoo of a dog's head. The left wrist shows a pug in soft grey and brown shading, and the right wrist shows a French bulldog with black shading and white patches. The plain white backdrop and soft lighting keep the focus on the detailed shading of the designs.

The pug had been sick on the towpath again, so Nell wiped it up with the sleeve of her oilskin and told Sergeant to stop looking so pleased about it. The bulldog only snorted, a wet sound like a kettle thinking about boiling, and went back to watching the water slide past the bows of the Patience as if it owed him money.

They had worked the Kennet for eleven summers, the two of them and the dogs, hauling coal for the old woman at Crane Lock and carrying hay bales for anyone who paid in cash. Tuppence rode in the cabin on a folded blanket that smelled of diesel and dried cod. Sergeant liked the bow, where the wind pushed his jowls back into a grin he had no right to. Nell had never once been able to say which of them had chosen the other.
The letter from the marina came in October, folded twice inside a seed catalogue. Nell read it standing at the tiller with the rain running off her hood. Mooring fees had doubled. The lock would close for repairs in the spring, and nobody could say for how long. She read it again, slower, the way you check a knot, then put it in her pocket and called the dogs in off the deck.
Sergeant came first, as always, shouldering past the hatch. Tuppence waited until the rain eased, then climbed up onto the cabin roof and sat with her paws tucked under her, her flat face turned toward the far bank. Nell let them stay out there together until the light went, saying nothing, because there was nothing to say that the river did not already know.
