Terrier in a gilded frame on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A terrier with a grey and black coat wears a dark jacket, purple waistcoat and red bow tie, shown in a dark blue background inside an ornate gold oval frame. The dog is rendered with fine, textured linework and soft shading, while the frame has bold outlines, scrolls and yellow flowers at the top and bottom. The composition is centred and upright, with the design filling most of the photographed skin.

Mrs Hester Lund had hung the portrait above the hall table before the first guests arrived in May, and nobody at Gull Rest had thought to ask why a terrier should hold the place of honour. Sergeant Wilf Tankard, who had taken the back room for the summer, said it was the only gentleman in the house who paid his rent on time.

Pemberton had been her late husband's dog, a grizzled little terrier who walked the promenade every morning in a waistcoat her sister had knitted and snapped at any gull brave enough to land on the railings. When he died in February, Hester sent to a studio in Scarborough for a likeness. The painter, a shy young man with ink on his cuffs, returned it with a bow tie of such scarlet insolence that Hester wept and then laughed for an hour.
Wilf noticed the habit on the first wet evening, when the guests had gone up and Hester sat alone with a pot of tea. She was talking to the picture. She asked it whether the tide would turn before dawn, whether the Morrison boy would ever learn to whistle, whether it was time to sell up. The dog's painted eyes stayed fixed on the door, as though someone might come through it at any moment.
On the last morning of the season, Wilf came down early to find the hall table bare and the frame leaning against the coat stand. Hester stood at the door in her good coat with a lead looped over one wrist. Outside, a grizzled terrier sat on the step with its tail going, as if it had come up from the sand to collect her. "Well," said Hester, "he's punctual, at least."
