Pug peering from a red hood
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a pug's head in profile, looking to the side from inside a red hood outlined in black. The dog's face, wrinkles and fur are rendered with soft shading and fine hatched linework, with black and tan tones giving depth. The bright red hood fills the upper and lower edges of the design, framing the pug against the skin and the blurred paved background.

Dear Mrs Okonedo, I am writing this from the back of the number 44 bus, which smells of wet umbrellas and the fish supper someone is eating two seats ahead of me. You asked me to explain why the church flower rota now features a small brown dog in a red anorak, and I can only say that Biscuit was never supposed to be inside the St Aldric's bake sale tin. He is a pug, Mrs Okonedo, and pugs do not understand the concept of a lid.

The red hood is the one from Mr Pell's stall at the market, the one he swore was waterproof. Biscuit wore it for three days before anybody noticed he had learned to peer out of it like a tiny monk in a hurry. Every time the vicar's wife waved at him he turned his head very slowly, the way a bishop turns away from a bad sermon, and wrinkled his whole face into an expression of deep disapproval. Honestly, it was the most dignified thing I have ever seen in a hood.
I have tried to return him to the lost property office at the pier, but the clerk looked at the photograph on my phone and asked whether I wanted a second opinion on the dog or the coat. So, Mrs Okonedo, I am on my way to the harbour with a carrier bag of biscuits, a red hood, and a plan. If you see a gentleman in a bobble hat tearing down Church Lane, please do not stop him. He is only trying to get the dog home before the tide does the job for him.
