Pug with crown and flowers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pug's head and front paw sit inside a rounded frame topped by a gold crown with red gems. The dog is shaded in grey and black with bold outlines, while the pink collar, red and gold jewel, pink blossoms and green leaves use flat, saturated colour. The design fills the frame neatly against a plain background on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band had reached the last waltz of the Saturday tea dance at the Majestic in Hove when Mrs Doreen Pask noticed her pug was no longer under the cloakroom table. Nobody thought to look for a pug in a pink collar on the dance floor, which is why Mabel was there, weaving between brogues and sequinned hems with her head high, as though the tin crown on the piano had been made for her.

The judges had been stuck since the quickstep. Colonel Ferris said the dog was a novelty and should be disqualified. Mrs Pask said Mabel had waltzed better than the Hartleys' Labradors, and the Hartleys' Labradors had been trained by a man from Brighton with a whistle. Mabel, who had heard none of this and cared less, sat down exactly on the beat, the way she always did when the crisps came out, and declined to move.

The Colonel leaned forward to look. The red paste stone on her brooch had caught the light from the chandelier and thrown a small pool of colour across the boards. Nobody in the room had ever been so thoroughly considered by a dog. He cleared his throat, took the crown from the piano and set it on her grey head, where it sat slightly crooked over one eye.

Mabel sneezed, shook it off, and was picked up by Mrs Pask, who carried her back to the cloakroom table to be fed a sausage roll. The crown went home on the Colonel's piano, polished and pointless, while the band struck up the final chord, and the dog, who had not been asked to dance at all, slept the whole way home in her own small kingdom.
