Forty hours into the inventory of Lantern Deck Seven, the auditor's drone refuses to log frame 3114 until you have looked at it yourself. It is a painted oval the size of a dinner plate, the sort of thing the old freighters hung above their bunks before anyone thought to print anything. Inside it a small dog sits upright in a plumed hat, a red coat buttoned high at the throat, and yellow roses curl along the bottom edge as if they were cut that morning.

The manifest calls it decorative and unregistered. You prise the backing free with a fingernail and find pencil on the board: Mr Pemberton, who kept the hold of the Wren for thirty-one years and never once let the water in. Beneath that, smaller, someone has written an apology for the lack of a better frame. You hold it under the strip light and the dog looks past you, dark-eyed and unbothered, at something beyond the edge of the paint.

By the next shift the crew has started calling him the Captain. Someone leaves a sprig of cress in front of the frame. Someone else, you notice, has straightened the hat.
