Schnauzer portrait in a teal wreath on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of a schnauzer's face with a black nose, dark eyes, open mouth and pale whiskered muzzle, set inside an oval wreath of teal and green ribbon with leaves and a small flower at the base. The dog is shaded in greys and blacks with bold outlines and soft highlights, while the wreath adds blue-green colour. The design is centred on a pale, smooth patch of skin with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Hettie Marsh had been told by the judge that the schnauzer's beard was the best he had seen in Cornwall, and she repeated it to the harbour master, the baker and anyone else who stood still long enough. Bramble, though, had not looked up once. He sat on the fish-market slip with his grey whiskers dripping, watching the gulls work the bins as if they owed him money.

The show had been held in the lee of the lifeboat station, under a flapping tent with a trestle of rosettes. Hettie had paid her entry fee in coins she counted twice, and when the steward pinned a blue-green ribbon to Bramble's collar, the dog sneezed and tried to eat it. Nobody minded. The ribbon was the colour of the water in the harbour on a calm morning, the colour of the bunting strung from the chandlery to the pub, and Hettie thought it looked like something a person could be proud of.
On the walk home the tide was out and the boats lay on their sides in the mud like tired horses. Bramble stopped at the end of the quay and would not go on. Hettie tugged, then sat down beside him on the cold stone, and they waited together for the water to come back up under the hulls.
When it did, it lifted the moored boats one by one, and the ribbon slipped from the dog's collar and went spinning off the edge of the wall. Hettie watched it float out between the buoys, bright as a signal, until it was too small to see. Bramble licked her wrist once, then trotted home ahead of her without it.
