Nobody in Hollin Bank would lend a pick to Tamsin Roe after the Michaelmas fall, because they said the seam had her name in it and would take another. So she sat on the step of the lamp room with a spool of pink silk and a heart cut from tin, and she worked the swirls into it the way her mother had worked lace, round and round until the middle was a knot nobody could see the end of.

The men went down at six. They came up at two, grey to the eyebrows, and each one walked past her step without looking, because a man does not look at a woman's sewing when he has coal in his teeth. But Tamsin kept tying. Every shift she threaded a length of ribbon through the open side of the heart, over and under, and she said the names of the men as she drew each loop tight.
When the pit cough came through the village that winter, the lamp room filled with men who had nowhere else to sit. Old Abel Crane said the thing looked like a fool's trinket. Then he saw the heart pinned above the lamp hook, and he sat beneath it all night, and by morning the air in the level was sweet enough to breathe. Tamsin never said what she had asked the seam for. She only kept the spool full.
