Purple awareness ribbon with heart on leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A small awareness ribbon tattoo in purple with a black outline, with a heart shape cut out of the upper loop so the skin shows through. The ribbon is shaded with lighter and darker purple to give it a soft, rounded look. It sits centred on a close crop of bare skin on the lower leg, with plain background.

The last reel of violet grosgrain had sat on the top shelf of Pell's Haberdashery since before the mill closed, and on the Thursday Ruth Pell finally decided it would go, she climbed the stepladder with both knees complaining and brought the box down in a cloud of dust. The bell above the door rang as she came off the bottom rung, which meant somebody was standing in her shop with a face on.

It was a young man called Tomasz, who needed ribbon for his sister's wedding favours. He turned the reel over and over in his big hands as if it might explain itself. "She wants lilac, not this," he said. "Says purple looks like a funeral." Ruth measured two yards against the brass rule, then a third, and cut them with her mother's shears, the ones with the bent handle that only ever cut true when she held them just so.

While he waited for his change she found a spare length and folded it into a loop, then another, pinching the middle until the two sides met. She snipped a small heart out of the top loop without quite deciding to, and held it up to the window. The afternoon came through the hole and laid a pale coin on the counter.

Tomasz looked at it for a long moment. "What's that one for?" he asked.

"Nothing, love. Just a thing I do with my hands when the shop's quiet." She slid the scrap across to him. He folded it into his jacket pocket without a word, and through the glass she watched him cross the road in the thin light, the little heart still in his pocket where he could feel it.
