The cat has got into the flour again, and this time she has gone to the trouble of tying herself into the bow you sent out with the last post. You will laugh. Mr Pargeter swears she did it herself, though he won't say why he was watching her at it. Her name is Mabel, after nobody in particular, and she has a face like a dinner plate that has been told a secret. The pink loop is on the left, the blue on the right, both spotted white like the dice in the wardroom.

There was nothing for it but to sit on the bench by the range with my elbows on my knees and eat a dry biscuit while the galley rolled. Do not send me more ribbon, though. Keep the spools for your own girls. The purser has promised me a berth ashore by spring, and when we tie up in Hull I mean to walk off the gangway with the cat under one arm and the bow still round her neck, and let the dock men try to stop me.
