Purple lily vine around an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A row of three purple lilies sits on a band of thin green vines with curling tendrils that wraps around the ankle. The petals are shaded in violet and lilac with darker purple detailing and yellow-orange stamens, while the stems and tendrils are drawn in dark green linework. The leg and foot fill the frame against a soft purple fabric background.

Dear Aunt Vivienne, the lilies came up in the back bed three weeks early, the way your mother always said they would if the winter was honest about being cold. I have pulled the bindweed from between them twice now and I am not sorry, because you did say the vine had to be kept back or it would strangle the bulbs you planted the year before you went to hospital.

I found the old seed packet in the potting shed, tucked behind the twine, the paper gone soft as cloth. Someone had written on the back in green ink: Plant in a ring, let them climb. I did not understand it until I saw the trellis Dad built, the one that leaned like a drunk for thirty years. The vine has crawled right round the iron post now, in loops that never quite meet, and the three flowers at the front have opened the colour of that dress you wore to Mum's wedding.

Ring Ruth at the allotment if the frost comes back. She has the good fleece and she owes me a favour over the marrows. Tell her the lilies are mine this year, and she can have the tendrils, since she always did like to tidy things up.

Your loving niece, Jo.
