What they don't know is where the lotus came from. Old Mr Halloran brought the seed back in his coat pocket after the war, wrapped in a handkerchief his mother had ironed flat. He'd been stationed out past Bombay, and he swore a holy man had pressed it into his palm and said, the water will tell you when it's ready.

Nobody believed him. Pond water in Ashby is brown as stewed tea and twice as cold. He planted it anyway, in a tin bath sunk in the mud, and every morning for three summers he went out with a jam jar of rainwater and a sort of prayer under his breath, the one that starts with a sound like a bell struck low. Folk laughed. The vicar's wife called it heathen. The boys threw stones at the bath until he chained a board over it.

Then one July, a single bud came up through the scum, and by the end of the month there were petals layered like the pages of a missal, deep violet at the heart and paler at the edges, so dark in the evening that the lamplighter stopped to look. Mr Halloran didn't gloat. He sat on the wall with his bad leg stretched out and said the thing about the water had been true all along, only nobody had been patient enough to wait for it.

He's been dead nine years now. But that lotus comes back every summer, and I'll tell you the truth: I go and sit by it when the house gets too loud.
