The customs post at Hollin Bridge had one gate, one stove and one grey dog who never asked for papers. Below the weir the river turned in slow curls, the kind Tobin the ferryman swore were the water remembering where it had been. In February the curls froze into the shapes of fern heads. A boy came across one dawn with a tin heart under his coat, its left half punched full of spirals, and asked her for the ribbon. Mari said it was not for sale. He said he had no coin, only the road home, which he had walked in the dark and could not find again.

She let him sit by the stove while the dog snored. When the light came up she untied the ribbon and laid it across the tin heart, green over black swirls, and told him to follow the colour rather than the road. The river would keep its curls, she said, but the ribbon would show the path on the far bank where the ice was thin.

At noon Eberhard stamped a form and found nothing to write. The boy was gone, and so was the ribbon, though the eggs were still in the basket and every one of them was whole. Mari crossed back that evening without it, and the river, for once, did not turn.
