Purple rose on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large rose in shades of violet, lilac and pink fills the centre of the image, with its petals curling open to show a pink centre. Green leaves surround the flower, with soft shading and highlights giving the petals and foliage a three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits on the shoulder and upper back, with blurred skin tones around it and a dark top visible at the lower left.

Oswin kept a notebook of crosses in pencil, each row dated, and the column marked Lilac Ruth had been left blank for three summers.

He didn't answer straight away. He was thinking about the pencil marks and how much easier they were to rub out than the things a man said across a kitchen table. Then he cut the stem with his good knife, wrapped it in damp newspaper, and handed it over the fence to her. "Take it to Ruth's grave," he said. "Tell her it came out purple after all."
