You asked in your last letter whether the swirl in the petals was just a bit of Dad's old wrought-iron gate or something he made up. It was neither. He pressed a sprig between the pages of the seed catalogue every August, and the flowers always dried with a curl at the centre, as if someone had stirred the purple with a fingertip. He said the deep colour at the edge was where the bloom was still holding on, and the paler middle was where it had let go.

I'm not going to pretend the shed is tidy. Your room is still a room, though, and I've left the window open a crack so the scent gets in. Bring the wellies at Christmas. The hedge needs cutting and I'm not doing it alone, however much you insist you'll be too busy with your exams.
