Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of a healed or healing tattoo on the top of a foot, with the words 'Until all the pieces fit' written in a dark script running diagonally across the skin. Above the text sits a heart filled with multicoloured puzzle-piece shapes and a blue ribbon, and a small blue puzzle piece sits at the right end of the line. The linework is clean and the colour is limited to the puzzle heart, ribbon and small piece, with the lettering in dark ink on a plain background of skin and wooden floor.

The lighthouse jigsaw has sat on the trestle table since breakfast, and by the time the vicar tells you to stop fussing, it is still one piece short. You are on your knees beside the cake with the torch from the car, because Aunt Maud swore the blue piece was the one thing she would never let anyone lose, and you promised her you wouldn't.

You check under the tablecloth, behind the raffle tickets, in the bin by the urn. At the far table a row of children are building a puzzle of their own, sorting pieces into saucers by colour. A boy with a biscuit in each fist tells you the trick is to start with the edges and not with the bit you want. You think about how Maud always said the sky was the hardest part, because all those blue pieces look the same until you hold them up to the window.

The bride is already tapping her glass when you finally go through your own jacket. The piece is in the inside pocket, pressed flat against the card you were meant to read from, where you tucked it at the car park so it wouldn't fall out in the wind. You had been so busy hunting for it that you forgot you were the one who had taken it.

You walk to the head table and set it in place. The bride squeezes your hand over the cloth, the lighthouse stands whole in its frame, and the whole room claps as if it has been waiting all day for the speeches. It was never the picture that had gone missing, only the spot where you had put it down.
