Black script lettering reading I loved you at your darkest, with a blue awareness ribbon, tattooed on the top of a foot.

Script quote and blue ribbon on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the words I loved you at your darkest in flowing black script, with the lettering running across the top of the foot. A blue ribbon with soft, painted-looking shading loops behind and through the middle of the words. The photograph is taken at a slight angle against a dark red background, with the lettering clearly in focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Corra had sewn ribbons for the court of Ambry for thirty-one years, and she could tell from the doorway when a customer had not slept. The young clerk from the palace wardrobe had not slept. He set a folded letter on her bench and asked for eleven yards of marsh-blue silk, delivered before the new moon.

Which occasion, she asked, though she already knew. The harbourmaster had gone out in the autumn gales and not come back, and the whole city had been wearing grey since. The clerk only nudged the letter toward her. The hand was careful and looped, the kind taught to royal scribes. It read: For Tobin, who climbed the lighthouse stairs every night when the light was low. Tell the lamp-girls to keep the window lit, whatever the weather. Tell him I loved him at his darkest, and that I still do.

Corra dyed the silk three times, letting each bath cool in the dark before she lifted it, because a blue drawn from a hot vat looked fierce and a blue drawn from patience looked like the sea at dawn. On the last morning she stitched the ends into a loop and sent it up the tower with a boy carrying lamp oil. It was meant to hang from the gallery rail, where the wind could take it.

The clerk came back at dusk to collect the banner and found Corra on her bench with the scissors still in her lap. Across the harbour, a single window had begun to glow, steady and blue-tinged through the glass. Is it right, he asked. She did not look up. Corra watched the light hold across the water and, for the first time since autumn, she set the scissors down.
