Fine line black tattoo of an infinity symbol with a small anchor running through it and a tiny red heart, on the side of a foot near the ankle.

Infinity symbol and anchor on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small fine line tattoo shows an infinity symbol with an anchor drawn through its loop, and a tiny red heart sits above the anchor's crown. The linework is thin and dark, with no shading, and the red heart is the only colour. The tattoo is centred on a close view of the side of a pale foot, with a car seat and a patterned bag blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marguerite, the boat is still in the harbour at Porthleven and I have not yet had the nerve to take her out past the breakwater alone. Your father's old chart is pinned above the galley table, the one with his pencilled soundings in the margins, and every evening I trace the line of the coast with my finger the way he taught us, as if the sea might rearrange itself if I stopped paying attention.

The man from the chandlery came up the pontoon this morning with the new chain and asked whether I was the one who had bought the anchor from the widow on Fore Street. I said I was. He said he had never seen a figure of eight rope-tied like that, the loops running round the shank so the thing could never be lost from its line, and I said that was precisely why I wanted it. He laughed and said nothing on the sea is ever really lost, only put somewhere we cannot reach for a while. I did not tell him I had spent the whole winter believing the same of you.

I have kept the small red wax seal from your last letter, the one you pressed with the ring that does not fit anyone now. When the wind backs round to the south tomorrow I will row out to the mooring, drop the old anchor over the side, and watch the rope run out until it goes dark. Then I will haul it back up and take it home, and the figure of eight will be whole again. Come home before the tide turns. The kettle is on, and the chart is still open at the bay where you were born.

Yours across every sea there is, Tom
