Puzzle heart on a upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman seen from behind on a wooden boardwalk by a lake, wearing purple sunglasses and a black and white zebra-print top. A heart shape made of interlocking puzzle pieces in red, green, blue, yellow and purple sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design is solid and flat in colour, with no visible shading, and the composition places it against a bright sky and open water.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Harold Pyke had cut wooden jigsaws in the back of Fenwick's hardware on Mill Street for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had asked him for a heart. Mrs Dorrance wanted one. She came in on a wet Tuesday with a shoebox under her arm and set it on the counter as if it might go off. Inside was a photograph of a lake, a pier with its planks silvered by weather, and a man in a rowing boat who had not come back in from the far shore the previous October.

"Eight pieces," she said. "No more. My husband liked things he could finish."
Harold measured the plywood twice before he touched the saw. He cut the heart first, then the interlocking edges, each knob and socket by hand so no two pieces matched. He painted them from the photograph: red for the boathouse roof, green for the reeds, blue for the water that had taken the man, yellow for the sun that kept coming out after the rain. The last piece he left bare, then painted purple without quite knowing why. It looked like something a person ought to carry.
When Mrs Dorrance returned on Saturday, he slid the finished puzzle across the counter. She tipped the pieces out and began to fit them, slowly, the way she might have reread a letter she already knew by heart. Halfway through, she stopped and looked up at him.
"You've left one out," she said.
"No, ma'am. That one's yours to keep."
