Q and K heart tattoos on the ankles
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two legs are photographed from behind, each with a small black tattoo just above the ankle. The left shows a serif letter Q above a solid black heart, and the right shows a serif letter K above a matching heart. The lines are crisp and even, the ink is solid black, and the plain tiled floor sits behind the legs.

She took it to her brother's flat on Anlaby Road, where Marcus was losing an argument with a kettle that refused to boil. He turned the cards over in his hands, said decks this old ought to be played rather than kept, and dealt them out on the draining board, nine to a hand, until the damp cardboard curled at the edges.
They played gin rummy until midnight. Somewhere between the third hand and the fourth she noticed him glancing at the window, where the bus shelter light made the street look like it was under glass. A letter had come that week about the lease, and neither of them had mentioned it. He found a biro in the drawer and, on the back of an envelope, wrote a Q and a K, then a small heart under each, the way their gran used to mark the scores in the margin of the pad.
In June the bus shelter light went out for good. Ruth found the king in the pocket of her winter coat, soft at the corners from being carried so close, and Marcus, when she rang him, said the queen had gone to live with their cousin in Leeds, where she could be properly looked after.
