Matching swirl symbol tattoos on feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of bare feet rests on grey carpet, with a small black symbol on the top of each foot. The symbol is a cross-like shape with curled, looping ends, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The two tattoos are mirror images of each other, and the photograph is shot from above with the toenails painted dark red on one foot and pale pink on the other.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Hesketh had the mason cut the mark twice, once on each side of the broken arch, because she said a door that opens two ways needs two keys. Dunmorrow Keep had been burnt in the wars and left to the jackdaws, and nobody in the valley went past the gatehouse after dark. Ida Crane was sent up anyway, with a bucket of lime and the courage she had borrowed from her brother.

She found the first mark where the mortar had crumbled, a cross with its arms curled over like fern heads. She scraped lime across it. Behind her the wind dropped all at once, and a voice she knew called her name from the lower courtyard. It was Tam's voice, and it used the pet name only he had ever used. But Tam had gone through the ice at the ford the winter before, and the voice kept calling, patient as a man waiting at a gate.

She did not turn round. She walked to the far side of the arch, where the second mark waited, and laid her palm over it the way Mother had taught her to settle a shutter against weather. The stone was warm, warmer than the sun could have made it. Somewhere under the rubble a bell rang once, flat and small, and then the courtyard was only wind and jackdaws again.

She went down the hill at sunrise with the bucket empty. In the village they asked whether she had seen anything, and she said only that the door was shut and that she had locked it from the outside, which was the rule. The next spring Tam's boots turned up on the bank below the ford, set side by side with the toes pointing towards the castle, and nobody could say who had placed them there.
