Small black fine line tattoo of the Republica del Ecuador Quito emblem on the inner wrist of a raised fist.

Quito coat of arms tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A clenched fist is raised toward the camera, showing a small tattoo of a circular emblem on the inner wrist. The tattoo reproduces a sun with a face, mountains, a tower and a bird inside a ring of lettering reading REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR and QUITO. It is rendered in black ink with fine outlines and light shading, and the background is a large black and white drawing of the same emblem.

The sun kept smiling no matter how deep Ignacio cut. For three weeks he had worked the brass die in the back room off Calle Chile, the gouge ticking against the metal while rain drummed on the tiles, and each morning the face he had sketched in pencil looked a little more pleased with itself than the council had asked for.

The councillors wanted a sun with dignity. Señor Pazmiño, who chaired the commission, held up the old wax impression from the archive and tapped the lettering with a fingernail: REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR, QUITO, the letters crowding the rim like passengers at a bus stop. The mountains were too tall, he said, the castle too small, and the bird looked lost. Ignacio nodded and said nothing, because the bird sat exactly where the condor sat on the original drawing, and he had no intention of moving it.

On the last night he sat under the lamp and cut the mountains again, deeper, the peaks sharp enough to draw blood from a careless thumb. He gave the tower its battlements and the sun its rays, one for every street he had walked to reach this workshop. The face he left alone. When the council pressed the seal into red wax the next morning, Pazmiño leaned in, frowned at the sun, and then, despite himself, felt the corner of his own mouth lift.

Ignacio wrapped the die in a cloth and walked home through the wet streets. Years later a clerk told him the seal still hung above the archive door, and that the sun there still looked as if it knew something it had no intention of telling.
