A black ink line drawing of a flying saucer beaming light over a desert scene with two cacti, stars and a scalloped oval frame. Below sits a mandala-style motif with an eye at its centre, flanked by leaf shapes and hanging diamonds. The bold lettering around the top and bottom reads Just Hold On We're Going Home, with radiating hatch lines behind it.

Mae had run the Sidewinder Café for nineteen years, and in all that time the only things to come off the highway at two in the morning were lorry drivers and the occasional lost honeymooner. So when the light came down over the mesa that August, she was already pouring coffee for the man in the corner booth, who never looked up from his crossword.

The thing settled behind the cacti, silver and dish-shaped, humming the way a fridge hums once you've stopped hearing it. Its light fell on the sand in a long pale column. A pilot climbed out, no taller than a milk crate, with a face like a dried plum and a jam jar tucked under one arm. He asked, very politely, whether the café sold anything without sugar in it. Mae gave him black tea and a slice of pecan pie, and he ate it with the solemnity of a man at a funeral.
His drive had cracked on a rock somewhere past the moon, he explained, and the repair needed a week of desert salt and a coil of copper wire from the hardware shop in Dry Creek. Mae drove him there in her Ford and waited while he argued with the till. Every night after that he sat on her porch and hummed into the jar, and every night the stars over the mesa seemed to lean a little closer, as if listening.
On the seventh night the jar crackled with a voice like wind through a screen door: Just hold on, we're coming for you. The pilot set the jar on the step and smiled. He wasn't going home, he said. Someone had to keep the light on for the next one who got lost. Mae turned on the porch lamp, and when she looked up again the saucer was a bright coin climbing into the dark, and the cacti stood in a row, their arms raised, as if they had been waiting too.
