Quote and birds along a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on wet sand with the sea behind it. The tattoo is the script quote not all those who wander are lost, with two small bird silhouettes, one before the words and one after them. The linework is fine and even, in dark ink, and the design follows the curve of the foot. The warm skin tones and soft blue background keep the focus on the text.

The gulls had given up on the rock by October, but the two small birds that nested in the vent above the lamp-room stayed on, and my mother would not let me shoo them. "They're keeping count of something," she said, and went back to the ledger where she wrote down every ship that passed the Scarra light.

The stranger came ashore at low tide with a map case under one arm and boots that had never been meant for wet sand. His name was Aldous Reece, and he had been sent by a railway company to measure the flats for a line that would never be built. He asked me which way was north. I pointed at the lamp, because that is the only north this rock admits to, and he laughed as if I had told him a good joke.
He stayed three nights in the spare room. On the last evening he showed me a pocket notebook with a line pencilled on the inside cover, in a looping hand that wasn't his. His sister had copied it from the margin of a tide table, he said, and it had been the only thing she ever wrote that he kept. Not all those who wander are lost. He read it twice, then closed the book and said the tide would turn at four.
He went out on the flood at first light, rowing badly and waving his hat. When his boat was a speck, the two birds lifted off the vent together and went south over the water, wings close, as if they had somewhere particular to be. I opened the log to write him down. One passenger, departed. Then, because my mother was asleep and the page was mine to fill, I added: not lost.
