Scripture quote in black script on a shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo spreads diagonally across the upper shoulder, reading I will fear no evil for thou art with me over two lines. The lettering uses a joined, handwritten style with fairly uniform black linework and no shading. The soft, warm background and light lace strap sit behind the skin, keeping focus on the text.

The lift at Coldharbour House stopped answering the call button after the winter the boiler went, so everyone on the eleventh floor took the stairs, and everyone knew about the landing between the ninth and the eighth, where the bulb had been dead since before anyone's mum moved in. Old Mr Pike the caretaker walked those stairs every night with a torch the size of a rolling pin, and when he reached that landing he always stopped and said the same words aloud, as if reading a notice nobody else could see.

Tomasz Greaves, who was nine and certain he was too old to be frightened, asked him why. Pike was sorting keys on a ring in the lobby and didn't look up. 'Because the dark gets bored of people who say nothing,' he said. 'It likes a quiet landing. So I give it something to listen to, and then it has to hear the rest.' Tomasz asked what the rest was. Pike said it was the bit about not being on your own, and that it wasn't his to say for other people, only to carry up and down the stairs so they'd know where it was.

That February the power went on the whole block in a gale, and Tomasz's little sister Ada went down in the black to fetch their nan's tablets from the bag left at the bottom. She came back up counting steps under her breath. Halfway up the eighth she stopped, because the stairwell had gone so quiet she could hear her own shoes. Then from below, slow and flat, a man's voice began: 'I will fear no evil.' It was Tomasz, climbing to meet her with the torch Pike had lent him, and he did not stop until he reached her.

Pike found them on the landing in the morning, both asleep against the wall, the torch still burning in Tomasz's fist. He didn't say anything. He took the keys from his pocket, tapped the brass ring twice against the rail, and went down to put the kettle on for the whole floor.
