Quote and birds along a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on wet sand at the water's edge, with the tattoo running along its outer side. The script wording reads "not all those who wander are lost" with two small bird silhouettes in flight, one at the start of the line and one between the words. The lettering and birds are rendered in dark, fine black ink on skin, and the soft beach background and natural light keep the composition simple.

The tide tables were pinned by the back door at Skerrow, and Ada had learned to read them before she could read the Bible on the dresser. Every morning her father ran a thumb down the columns and called out the times as if they were train departures. Her brother Danny was the one who never stayed put. He walked the sands at low water out to the rocks past the groyne, and came home with wet socks and pockets full of razor shells.

The spring the swallows nested in the boathouse, Danny stopped coming back for supper. Father went out with the lamp at dusk and found only footprints, slowly filling with seawater and heading north towards the ness where the coastguard kept a hut. Ada took the old atlas from the shelf and wrote on its flyleaf in pencil: not all those who wander are lost. It was a line their mother used to read aloud from some book nobody could name any more.
Two days later a gull landed on the boathouse roof with a strip of oilcloth knotted to its leg. Ada climbed the ladder and worked the knot loose with her teeth. Inside was a scrap of Danny's handwriting saying he had found the far side of the bay, where the sand ran flat as glass and the birds knew the way home. Beneath it he had drawn two small birds in flight, one at the start of a line and one between the words, the way he always signed his letters.
Ada pinned the note beside the tide tables. Low water came at ten past six, and she made up her mind to be on the sands for it. Father could follow if he liked. She tucked the pencil behind her ear, stepped out barefoot onto the wet shingle, and let the cold water run over her toes.
