Black script lettering reading not all those who wander are lost, with a feather and a small bird, tattooed on the ankle of a foot on a beach.

Feather, bird and quote on the ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests in shallow water on a sandy beach, with a black script quote running diagonally along the outer ankle and foot. A feather and a small bird sit beside the words, drawn in smooth, solid black ink with no visible shading. The soft blue and white background is out of focus, which keeps attention on the tattoo.

Mrs Pargeter at the post office says I should go up to the city for the winter, that a woman of thirty-one ought to have a flat with a proper kettle. She has a point about the kettle. But last week I found a feather on the path below the hide, grey and barred at the tip, and I stood there with the wind getting under my collar, thinking of the ones blown off course that end up in Norway, or Iceland, or nowhere at all. Those birds are not lost. They are only further from the hedge than the rest of us.

I have enclosed the feather. Keep it in your coat pocket and don't tell Dad where it came from. He'll only ask why I'm not home for Christmas, and I'll tell him the truth, which is that the birds are still arriving and somebody has to be here with the rings.

Love, Ruth
