Black fine line handwritten tattoo reading I love you to the moon and back with a small crescent moon below, on the inner wrist beneath a metal watch.

Quote and crescent moon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words I love you to the moon and back in thin, handwritten black script across three lines, with a small solid crescent moon beneath. The linework is delicate and even, with the ink appearing crisp and slightly soft at the edges. The photograph is taken from the underside of the wrist, with a metal watch strap above and the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Nan,

The dust got into the seals again, so the hab smells of struck matches and hot pennies. You asked whether the Moon looks different up close. It doesn't, not really. It looks like the photograph on your calendar, only the grey goes on for ever with nothing to hang a curtain from. The best part is the terminator, when the sun comes in low across Shackleton's rim and every ridge lights up thin as a fingernail paring. I keep failing to describe it, so you'll have to take my word.

Okonkwo, who runs our shift, taps his wrist at every handover and says, same time tomorrow, same distance. Last Tuesday he showed me the delivery slip he keeps folded behind his watch strap. On the back, in pencil, his father had written: I love you to the moon and back. He wrote it the morning the first tanker left the dock, then climbed aboard, and the joke has outlived them both.

That night I did the sum on the back of my ration card. Lunar orbit to Earth and back is somewhere over seven hundred thousand kilometres, depending where the Moon sits. Then I laughed, because I was sitting in a tin room counting distance to a line on a dead man's slip of paper.

I'm posting this on the morning run with a crescent drawn in the margin, badly done. Tell Mum the seals are fine and I'm eating properly. Write back soon and tell me what the sky looks like where you are. Here the stars don't twinkle at all.

Love, Maddie
