You asked whether I had got lost yet. I have, quite thoroughly, and I have decided it is not the worst thing that can happen to a person on a Tuesday.

There is a signalman here called Mr Okafor who knows every timetable by heart and still asks the pigeons for directions. Yesterday he showed me the lost property ledger, pages of umbrellas and one left glove, each entry in a different hand. Beside a row of 1931 entries someone had pencilled a line about roads that do not lead home, and Mr Okafor said the swallows nest in the girders every spring and have never once needed a map. Fancy that, he said, and went back to waving his flag at nothing in particular.

So I bought a ticket to the end of the line, which is a place called Holyhead that I had only ever seen on the departure boards. The train was half empty and smelt of wet coats. Somewhere past Bangor the ticket inspector asked where I was bound, and I told him I would let him know when I got there. He laughed, punched my ticket anyway, and let me keep the window seat. I will write again from the sea. Please do not send a search party. Love, Maud
