Fine line black tattoo of three birds in flight above cursive script on the inner wrist and forearm.

Three birds and script quote on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three small black birds in flight sit beside a line of cursive script on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin tone and soft, blurred background of denim and fabric keep the focus on the tattoo.

"Hold the rope steady, Ada, the tide's turning," Tomas shouted from the stern of the Morag, and the girl pulled until her palms burned. She was nine and had never been further than the far side of the Sound. Her mother had gone across on the Tuesday boat for the hospital, and the island's one ferry was the only thread between them.

Every evening that week Ada stood on the pier and counted the swifts wheeling over the bay. Her grandfather had told her that birds never argued about who would lead; they simply tilted and followed. When she asked Tomas what happened if a flock split apart in bad weather, he wiped his hands on his oilskin and said, 'Then they find each other again, same as anyone who means it.'

On the Friday she sat on an upturned creel with a stub of slate pencil and wrote the words her grandfather used to sing, 'If you're a bird, I'm a bird'. Beneath them she drew three small wings, flat and quick, and slid the slate into the ferryman's satchel. 'Don't drop it,' she said. Tomas said nothing, only tucked it under his arm as though it were a ledger.

Three weeks later the post boat came in low in the water, and on its bow someone had chalked three black birds, wings up, flying straight at the island. Ada ran the length of the pier before the rope was tied, and her mother was already climbing out, one hand on the rail, laughing at her.
