Script quote with three birds on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows three bird silhouettes in flight beside handwritten cursive script that reads if you're a bird, I'm a bird. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black with no shading. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred grey-blue denim background, with the wrist and hand filling the frame.

Do you remember the game? You'd say if you're a bird, and I had to answer I'm a bird, and then we'd both have to be whatever came next. Mum hated it. She said we'd break our necks off the shed roof. We never did. We only ever got as far as the rhubarb bed, arms flapping, you shouting about thermals.
Dad's shed is still there, though the door has dropped on its hinges and Mrs Akers next door has taken over the far border with dahlias. Last week I went round the back with a trowel and dug up the old biscuit tin he buried under the lilac. Inside were the letters you wrote from Leeds, the ones he never passed on to us, which I suppose he couldn't bring himself to throw away either. I've put them in an envelope with this one.
Come up at the weekend. Bring your boots. The garden's gone wild and I can't get the ladder to stand straight on my own. I'll be on the back step with my arms out, waiting for you to say it first.
