Quote lettering on the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a person's foot in a dark glitter ballet flat, with jeans cuffed at the ankle. Two lines of black serif lettering run diagonally across the top of the foot, reading She has no idea. The effect she can have. The ink is solid black with clean edges and the words sit on a slight angle, with the wooden floor and flat light making up the background.

Dear Tom,

The harbour has been grey since you sailed, and the gulls have grown bolder without you to shout at them. I write because I have news I cannot share with Mother, who would only fret about the Pennington boy and his lobster pots.
The news is Nell Ferris, who came over on the Tuesday packet to take the chandlery ledgers off old Mr Dunn. She adds faster than the tide turns. On Thursday she corrected his sums in pencil, then rubbed out her workings so he could pretend he had got it right first time. Half the quay is halfway in love with her, and she goes about her business as though we were all just weather passing over the slipway.
Yesterday the lamp-room men wanted to know whether she was spoken for. I told them to ask her themselves, and they went red to the ears and found reasons to be somewhere else. Mrs Coyle has started leaving out extra saffron buns for her on the windowsill, and Ned Harrow has repainted the bench outside the net loft twice this week, though nobody has sat on it since the Feast.
She has no idea, Tom. Not one notion of what a single morning of her looks like from the other side of the glass. I have decided to keep it that way. Let her think the boats come in on their own and the lamp lights itself at dusk. It is the only thing in this town that still runs as it should.
Your loving sister, Bett
