Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot in black glitter ballet flats, with jeans cuffed at the ankle. The top of the foot carries a two-line quote in black serif-style lettering, with the first line set higher than the second. The ink is solid black on a warm wooden floor backdrop, with the shoes and tattoo forming the focus of the frame.

The bandleader at the Mechanics' Hall had asked Nell Garside twice whether black glitter pumps were sensible for a Saturday waltz, and twice she had told him the boards were sprung and the shoes were hers. Mr Abbott was a careful man who counted bars under his breath. Nell was not careful at all, which was why the Thursday rehearsal had gone so badly.

Ruth Pembery ran the cloakroom and had never once stood in the middle of the floor. Since October she had been dancing alone by the coat rack, one hand on a hanger, turning slowly while the rest of the hall argued over raffle tickets. Nell saw it from the stage steps. On the back of the raffle sheet she wrote two lines in her neatest hand and slid it under the piano lid: She has no idea. The effect she can have.

Abbott found it during the interval. He read it twice, then looked across the hall at the cloakroom door, where Ruth was pretending to count hangers. He took a stub of pencil from behind his ear and wrote a bar number beneath the note, the start of a waltz he had been keeping for nobody in particular.

When the band struck up again, Ruth was already crossing the boards in her cardigan, and the glitter on Nell's shoes caught the lamps as she stepped down to watch. The floor took their weight the way it had been built to. By the second chorus the whole room had turned towards the cloakroom, and nobody needed the note read aloud.
