The rain came sideways across the car park at Harrow Lane market by nine, and Gwen Pryce gave up on her own awning and stood under mine instead. I'd tied the tarpaulin off the scaffold pole with baler twine that morning, so it sagged in the middle like a wet hammock, and I sold dried porcini from a row of jam jars to anyone who ducked in out of the weather.

'You're the mushroom man,' she said, shaking water off her coat onto my scales. 'I knew who I was this morning, Ivan. Told myself so over the kettle.' She laughed the way people do when they've been up since five. 'Then the bus driver called me love, and by Tesco I was somebody else.' I weighed fifty grams of chanterelles into a paper twist, the kind my dad used to wrap sweets in, and told her the trick with dried ones is to soak them in warm water for twenty minutes and keep the liquor, because that's where the woods are. 'So I'm not who I was,' she said, 'but the stock's still good.'
I thought about that all week. In eleven years on this pitch I'd raised the porcini price twice, moved from the gate to the corner by the bins, given up smoking, and collected a steady stream of arguments with my brother about which of us had the old van's keys. Every morning I looked in the mirror over the sink and half expected a stranger to nod back, and mostly one did, a bit greyer than the day before.
When the rain eased, Gwen left a folded note under the saffron jar. It said: Same man, different mushrooms. Next Saturday, bring the ones with the gills. Then the sun came out over the bins, and every puddle in the car park held a small upside-down sky, and I found I didn't mind being someone new for a while.
