Quote lettering with key, mushroom and cupcake
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink design of the quote "I knew who I was this morning but I've changed a few times since then" set in ornate, hand-drawn lettering. Small illustrations of an ornate key, a mushroom and a cupcake with an "Eat Me" tag sit alongside the words. The linework is solid black on white with no shading, so it reads as a stencil-ready flash sheet.

Mrs Ottoline Pratt had been sent the brass key in a jiffy bag with no note, which was how she knew it came from her brother Lionel. He had always been the sort to post things without explanation. The key was ornate, with a bow at the top twisted like a pretzel, and it fitted nothing in the house on Wrenfield Road: not the gas meter, not the bureau, not the tea caddy she tried it on in a fit of temper.

She carried it down to the bakery on the high street, where the girl at the counter, Priya, was icing a tray of cupcakes the colour of weak tea. Each one had a tiny paper tag on a wire. Eat Me, the tags said. Priya shrugged. The ones with tags sold out first, she said, because the children always wanted to know what would happen.
Pale mushrooms had begun appearing on the back step in a neat ring, the kind Lionel used to pick in the orchard behind the old cider press every August, insisting they were perfectly safe. Ottoline had never trusted him on fungi. She ate one anyway, standing barefoot in the wet grass, and felt the room stretch away from her like a pulled sleeve. The newspaper on the step had letters the size of fence posts.
When she woke the next morning she was a different size again, and the key lay on the kitchen table, now the height of a tea tray and warm to the touch. She looked at it for a long while. Then she reached up, took hold of the bow, and turned it as if it had always been hers. "Well," she said to nobody, "I suppose I'll have to make do."
