Nell had the lamb in a hay-bale pen behind the Waltzer when the lion first put his head over the rail, and she did not shout for Teddy the way the sensible girls would have. The lion was called Brannock and had come up from a menagerie in Hull with a torn ear and a temper nobody argued with. The lamb was called Biscuit because the Dunmore children had named it before the auction, and it had a habit of following whoever held the bucket.

Brannock did not roar. He lay down with his chin on the rail and breathed out slowly, the way old dogs do when they have decided something. Every evening after that, while the generator coughed and the lights of the big wheel blinked on over the stubble, the lion came to the rail and the lamb came to meet him, and Nell sat on an upturned crate and pretended she was only counting tickets.
The showman found out in August. He came round with his hat in one hand and a bottle of gin in his coat, and said that a lion who went soft was a lion who went hungry, and that the bigger tents would not pay for sentiment. Nell said nothing. She simply stopped sitting on the crate, and for three nights the pen stayed quiet.
On the last night of the fair, the gate stood open and the field was empty except for two shapes lying close together in the wet grass beyond the lights, one gold and one white, while the wheel turned slowly above them, carrying nobody at all.
