Heart of a Lion lettering on chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the upper chest showing the words Heart of a Lion in a black, typewriter-style font set in a single line. The lettering has crisp, even lines with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The text sits centrally across the skin, with a pale top and a light bra strap at the bottom edge of the frame.

Ruth Lacey had the best hands in our year, and she was the only one Pargeter ever let near it. She was going to be a secretary in London, she said, so she could write to the Prime Minister about the bus timetable. One wet Thursday she sat hammering out three words over and over, until the e had gone soft and the bell rang for dinner. Nobody asked her why. You didn't, with Ruth.

Thirty-one years later I found the sheet in Pargeter's desk when the school went up for sale. Dozens of copies, every one the same line, struck so hard the paper had split at the corners. Tucked underneath was a note in a schoolgirl's round hand: when the ribbon runs out, you just press harder. He never answered her letters, mind, so we'll never know what she asked him.

Right, that's my tale. Who's having the last custard cream? Don't all rush at once.
