Rabbit head tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A rabbit head with long, upright ears and an angular face is tattooed on the ankle and lower leg. It is drawn with dark outlines and grey shading on the ears and face, with fairly bold linework. The plain carpet and grey sneakers keep the focus on the tattoo.

Sit nearer, the lot of you, the fire will not reach the back row and I have no wish to shout. This is the tale of the Gresham Crossing, where the river bends under two flags and a hut with one window. The guard there was called Orla Pennick, and she had a rule: every traveller paid a toll of one true sentence before the barrier rose. Most paid in coins. Most paid in lies, and the barrier stayed down until they grew tired of standing in the sleet.

One night in February, with the wind driving off the water, a rabbit came up the road on its hind legs. Its long grey ears stood straight as church spires, and its face was all angles, like something sketched quickly by a person in a hurry who was not sorry for it. It carried no papers and no coins. It leaned on the sill and said, "Tell me what you are carrying across, Orla, and I'll tell you what I'm carrying back."

She laughed, because nobody laughs at a border guard. Then she told it the truth, the thing she had never told her brother or her mother: she had kept the post for twenty years because she was frightened of what lay on the far bank. The rabbit listened with its head tilted, the way a clock listens. When she finished, the barrier lifted by itself.

Nobody saw the rabbit cross. Orla kept the hut for thirty more winters, and every February a parcel arrived at the window, wrapped in brown paper, holding one grey feather and a note in careful capitals: YOUR TURN TO GO.
