A small black single-line tattoo of a cat seen from the side, sitting upright with its head turned, pointed ears and a tail curling into a spiral at the base. The linework is thin and even on pale skin, with no shading or added colour. The ankle is shown in a close crop with a pink sock and navy canvas trainer with blue laces below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had the rope in his hands before the bell finished, because the cat had already gone up the tower stairs at the sound of mice in the refectory. I followed with the lantern. Abbot Cuthbert wanted the grain store clean for winter, and the only creature he trusted with it was a grey tom we called Marrow, who had been left at our gate as a kitten the year the roof fell in.

Marrow never hurried. He would sit on the scriptorium windowsill for an hour, watching the light move across the vellum, and when Brother Osric set down his pen to stretch, the cat would turn his head and study the ink as though checking it for mistakes. Osric said it was the only critic he had ever feared.

The winter the sheep died on the north slope, Marrow stopped eating the mice and began leaving them on the infirmary step, laid out in a neat row. Nobody could say why. Brother Anselm thought it was a kindness. I thought it was a warning, and that the rest of us had grown careless.

On the feast of Saint Gregory, when the new psalter was finished and lay open on the lectern, we found Marrow curled in the middle of its last page, his tail wound round his body in one long unbroken spiral. Nobody had the heart to move him. We left the book open another day so he could keep it warm, and the ink dried while he slept.
