Rabbit mask and moon on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo of a grinning rabbit-eared mask with pale, glowing eyes and teeth, set against a dark, smoky background. A crescent moon sits above the mask and the numerals 06:42:12 run along the lower left, in a sharp, handwritten-style font. The shading is soft and high contrast, with fine highlights on the mask and dense black behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bells at Haldane Lock stopped at twelve minutes to seven each morning, and nobody in the district could agree on why. The council sent you up the tower with a lamp and a ledger because you were the only clerk who never slept through the grey hour. Your job was to write down whatever the bells failed to say.

For the first week you recorded only the weather: a sky the colour of wet slate, a moon hung low over the gasworks like a thumbprint on glass. On the eighth morning a figure stood in the square below, tall and narrow, its head a long pale mask with eyes like polished pebbles and a grin that seemed to run past the edges of its face. It did not come toward the tower. It only tilted its head, the way a child checks whether a clock has stopped, and the bells gave a single soft tick.

You wrote it down. Six forty-two and twelve seconds, in your cramped hand, and beneath it the word present. By noon the whole street had its own version of the story, and by dusk the council wanted the page torn out. You kept the ledger instead and climbed the tower each dawn to wait for the sum to finish.

On the last morning the square was empty and the bells rang clean at six forty-three. Nobody thanked you. You checked the ledger once more, found your handwriting steady, and noticed the moon had shifted westward, as if it had been waiting for the clock to start again.
