Black linework heart with LOVE is LOVE lettering over a rainbow watercolour wash, tattooed on the forearm.

Rainbow heart with LOVE is LOVE script

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outlined heart sits on the inner forearm, with the words LOVE and is LOVE written in looping script across and within it. Behind the linework, a rainbow of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple is brushed on in loose, soft strokes that look like watercolour. The composition is centred on the heart, with the skin and a blurred warm background filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler at the Lantern Hall knew only two tunes, so every Saturday the dancers had to settle which one he would play. Mags Holloway had asked for the waltz three weeks running. Three weeks running Tobias Wren had stood by the tea urn with his cap turning in his hands and said nothing at all, which in Haddon Fold was taken as a yes by everyone except the vicar's wife.

Mags's cousin dyed silk in the back room of the mill, and that spring she had sent up a bundle of ribbons: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and a violet so deep it looked wet. Mags sorted them on the windowsill for an evening, then tied one to the handle of her basket and carried the rest down to the hall. Nobody asked what they were for. Old Ada Pim took one and wound it through her grey plait without a word.

When the fiddler struck up the waltz, the floor cleared the way it always did, and Mags crossed it with her basket swinging. Tobias took her hand. A man near the door muttered that the hall had only ever had a man and a woman on the boards, and the caller, who had heard him, told him to mind his feet. The ribbons went round their wrists, one colour after another, until the fiddler stopped to look and forgot his bow was still in the air.

They turned until the lamps smeared into one warm yellow and the ribbons streamed out behind them like a flag nobody had been asked to salute. By the last chord the whole room had paired off, though nobody had decided it. Ada Pim said afterwards that the colours had gone round the hall twice and come back to the door, and that the hall had never once been unkind to anyone who kept time.
