Ram head tattoo and colour calf design on a cyclist

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A cyclist in shorts is shown from the side, with a black and grey ram head tattoo with curled horns on the outside of one leg. On the other leg, a bold colour tattoo includes a green and teal animal form, a red and yellow diamond shape and dark outlines. Shading is smooth on the ram and the background is pale and softly out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Skerra Ness had ever seen the tup leave the top field until the summer the second-hand bicycle came over on the ferry. Mrs Ailsa Dunnet had bought it in Stornoway with her post-round savings, a red frame with a faded name scrawled along the top tube, and she rode it up the single track each morning with the sack of letters strapped behind her and the sea knocking at the rocks below.

The ram was waiting at the cattle grid. He had horns that curled twice round his head like the spring of a clock, and a yellow stare that did not blink when the wheels stopped. The first morning she stood astride the saddle and asked him, very politely, to shift. He lowered his head and considered the bicycle the way a magistrate considers a poor excuse.

She began bringing him things. A heel of bread from the Co-op, a fistful of sea-pinks, once a biscuit tin of her late father's pipe tobacco that she regretted at once. On the ninth morning he stepped aside without being asked, and she rode through with her heart going like a loose pedal. At the summit she turned to look back and saw him standing in the middle of the road, watching her go as if she were the one who needed escorting.

These days the island children say the ram is the postwoman's, and that is why the letters always reach the right door. Ailsa never corrects them. She knows who has been doing the favours, and it is not her.
