Bicycle wheel and gear tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a bicycle wheel with radiating spokes sits inside a toothed gear outline on the outer thigh. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with the spokes drawn as thin lines and the gear teeth as solid shapes. The photo is taken from above, showing black shorts, black sneakers, a bicycle handlebar and grass in the background.

Brother Anselm has taken the chainring off the old Raleigh again, and I am writing this with grease still under my nails because you asked me to report on the spoke count, and I would rather tell you about the wheel. Thirty-six spokes, laced by hand in the cold room behind the bakehouse, each one tensioned until it sang when I flicked it with a fingernail. Brother Osric says the gear is wasted on a machine that only ever goes down to the village and back, but he has never ridden it down the Coldharbour hill with the brakes gone.

The gear was my idea. The abbey had the wheel from a dead man's shed and nothing else, so I cut the ring from a tractor part the carter left, filed the teeth by lamplight, and bolted it to the hub so the spokes looked like they were turning the world. Abbot Hildred came out to watch the first test and laughed until he had to sit on the mounting block. He said a wheel that wants to go somewhere ought to be able to say so.
I went down to Thornbury yesterday with the post, pedalling slowly because the rain had turned the lane into a river. Halfway down the chain jumped the teeth and I thought I had lost the lot, but it caught on the third pass, and I rode the rest with the low sun coming through the spokes and laying a dial across the road. I have made a decision. I am going to ask the abbot whether I may take the second wheel to the coast next spring. Pray for me, and for the tyres.
